My srs light is on my ‘98 civic and shop says air bag won’t deply; I get to bring it to the dealer and spend big $?. Or I heard there might be a lifetime warrantly on airbag service. Is that right?

the srs light can come on for many reasons. the most popular reason is a bad switch in the seat belt buckle that doesn’t let the air bag control unit know when you have a seat belt on. Honda has a lifetime warranty on the seat belts so if that were the case, it should be repaired at no charge.

there are about 15 other reasons the light can be on. if it is on because of any other reason, you would have to pay for the repair. most dealers charge a fee to ‘pull the code’ to tell you what the probable cause is. it should cost less than $30 for them to do so. if its a problem with the seatbelt, then you wouldn’t pay for diagnosis or repair. if its something else, the dealer could give you an estimate at that time for either additional diagnosis or for part replacement.

because a great many problems with airbags result from collision events, there is no ‘lifetime’ warranty on air bags. the only applicable warranty at this time is the seat belt lifetime warranty.

the mechanic wanted me to pay $109 for a scope before he would turn the SRS indicator light off. My SRS light stayed on after leaving the seat belt jammed in the door accidentally over night. There was an air bag inflator recall on all Honda civics. The mechanic stated turning the SRS light off wouldn’t work unless he did the scope, because he claimed that the light had nothing to do with the airbag recall… Is that true?

The SRS light has nothing to do with the seat belt. It is very possible that the recall is the cause of the light. Take the car in for the recall and they will tell you if there is another problem with the system. I would bet that when they do the recall, the light will be reset at no charge.

You may want to shop for a more honest mechanic

The mechanic borrowed an updated scanner and he was able to turn it off. He said the borrowed scanner said it was on due to an old code for a crash sensor communication. The car hasn’t been hit in years. Anyway, it came back on the very next day or 3rd key cycle. How can I fix this. He said only the dealers scanner can go deeper into tracking it down and that is is beyond his capabilities (he is a well respected local mechanic- not a Nissan tech). Any thoughts? That blinking light is annoying.

If you have the airbag light, it will show steady for a few seconds (the manual says 7 secs) after you turn the key from off to on (but not start) and then start to flash. Here is how to reset it:

1. Turn the key from off to on.

2. Watch the airbag light closely. It will stay on for a few secs. and then as soon as it blinks off (the start of the flashing), turn the key off instantly.

3. Count to 5 (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi . . . .)

4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times until you have done the cycle three times.

5. Now turn the key on and watch the light. It will start blinking in a different, slower manner. This is diagnostic mode. You can watch this for a little while, no hurry.

6. Now turn the key off again, Count to 5 like in step 3 again, and turn back on. If the procedure worked, the airbag light will not be flashing.

If it does not work the first time, just repeat the steps again

How to fix any dash light that stays on! This is a free fix that takes about an hour to do. We’ve all had that annoying dash light stay on constantly. It NEVER goes out and glares in your face every time you drive your car. It’s distracting and you want it off regardless of what it takes. Take the dash out. Turns out my car used a 7mm socket to take out the two bolts holding in the plastic dash bezel on. Remove that and gain access to the 4 bolts holding on your dash unit. Remove the bolts holding on the dash assembly and remove the dash. Some cars have individual lights for each dummy light. Such lights as Check Engine Soon, Service Vehicle Soon, ABS, Antilock Brakes, Security, Brake, Trac off, Traction off, Airbag, SRS, etc. After the dash is out find the correct light you want turned off and remove the light from behind, on older models. On Newer models, take the dash out and pull it apart at the clips. Gain Access to the circuit board. When you plug in the dash you’ll see where the light is on the other side. Sometimes you won’t be able to gain access to the light itself. So, what I did was cut through the circuit board line that goes to the light effectively cutting the power line in to that certain light. Be sure you cut the right ones! If you have questions just ask, I’ll try and guide you through. Check the dash once the lights out or cut and bolt everything back together. Easy and free fix!

i recently bought a 1992 3000gt sl from a kid and it didnt pass emissions or inspections. It has a loose tire rod, it shoots white smoke during emissions, the srs airbag light wont turn off and recently i just got gas and while driving, the check engine light came on. Also, when i leave the car off for a couple of hours and turn it back on and put it into first, the car moves but jerks forward a lil bit multiple times then drives, but after that, it runs fine for the rest of the time you drive it as long as u dont keep it off for too many hours. Do u guys know what any of these problems could be and how i can fix them? thanks

White smoke can be a lot of things. Try replacing your PVC valve first they are cheap. Could be your burning antifreeze, which could be from a bad head gasket. (expensive) SRS light? No clue, maybe he wrecked it or something. Go to autozone or checkers to get the check engine light checked out, its free they just hook up a little thing to your car and tell you why its on.
Your car jerks forward a couple times at first, then drives fine?
Assuming you know how to drive…. sounds like a clutch or transmission problem.
