Is it safe to re-connect a disconnected SRS (airbag) wire?

Posted by admin

I recently bought a used 1997 Honda Accord V6. The dash SRS light was on, so I was going to reset the SRS light by using the paperclip method at the MES connector. However, upon looking under the dash at the base of my steering column, I could see that the airbag plugs (both yellow with 2 wires each) were disconnected. I haven’t reset the light yet since it will obviously still go back on with these wires not connected.

I don’t know why they are disconnected but the car does have a remote starter installed in it so I don’t know if whoever installed it would have needed to disconnect the plug and forgot to plug it back together or what. What could be reasons as to why this plug was disconnected in the first place?

The dealer wants $135 just to look at it. If it could be as simple as just re-connecting the plugs and resetting the SRS light I can do that myself.

I read that messing with the SRS system could be dangerous, ie airbags deploying etc. Would this also apply to just simply reconnecting the already disconnected plugs/harness?

Just make sure you disconnect the battery before you connect it back up. I’ve personally never seen one get set off by plugging it in with the battery still hooked up but wouldn’t be a bad idea as a safety measure.

EDIT- The only thing a shop is going to do is exactly what I stated. The air bag was probably disconnected during the remote start installation. Secondly any time there is an air bag fault and the light is turned on, the whole system is disabled. There are many checks that the Air bag module has to go through before deeming it necessary to deploy the air bag. If you remove the battery terminal and reconnect the plug, then re hook the battery up and if the bag deploys, then you are away from it any way. If there is a problem with the bag then it disables the system again and will not deploy regardless. Take some advice from someone that IS certified and not some car collector…
