Do you have to wait for the airbag light to turn off before starting the engine?

Replacement Airbags For your Vehicle

My mom told me that a friend of hers (who helped her buy her car) told her that she should wait for the airbag light on the dash to turn off before starting the engine. When I asked her why, she couldn’t elaborate, but said it was for the good of the car.

Is there any truth to this? I had never heard of something like that before. I bought my own car recently and I’m curious if I should be doing this.

NO – You do not have to wait. The light you see is just the airbag system doing a self diagnostic. After a while owning this car you won’t even notice it. Starting the car before the light goes out has no effect whatsoever.

No they go OFF after you start the car too.

As long as the engine goes off, everything is working. If the light never goes off, it is an indication that SOMETHING is wrong with the air bag system.

It makes no difference when you start the engine.

Now you know your friend knows NOTHING about cars and should avoid taking advice from her.

    Good Luck…

The air bag light, on some cars, won’t go off until after the engine is running. Afraid your mom’s friend didn’t know what she was talking about.

No need to wait for the light to go out. The ONLY thing I can think of is allowing the fuel pump to pressurize the fuel system before cranking the car… but even the fuel pump is fast so it isn’t a big deal

sometimes if I have something that doesn’t weigh much on the passenger seat, like a case of beer, 😉 , the light stays on.
