Why does the airbag light keep flashing in my dashboard?

Replacement Airbags For your Vehicle

I have a 1995 Buick Riviera Supercharged and it has been flashing the Air Bag light while it is on. Is this bad? How can i find out what is wrong with my car? Thanks in advance.

The only time a Riviera will flash the Air Bag light is when it does its diagnostic self-test during startup. It will flash seven times and go out. If there is a fault in the airbag system, the computer will flag a code and command the airbag light to come on steady and remain on until the code is cleared. Although on some of the older GM stuff you could jumper the diagnostic scantool port for certain programming tasks like remote keyless entry, I do not believe that is the case with the airbag system. You’re going to have to take it in and have it diagnosed in order to fix it right.

  1. Jeremy Said,

Logic dictates that there’s something wrong with your airbag. Does your car have an on-board diagnostics system? If so, you can take it to AutoZone or a similar place and they’ll read the error message the computer is sending.

If I’m not mistaken, OBD systems were implemented in 1996. Your vehicle could still have it, though.

sadly the only thing that autozone can check out is an engine light…..usually it will falsh if there is a lost signal from either the airbag or the airbag sensors located in usually the fron and rear bumpers usally happens after a fender bender not bad enough for the airbags to go off

On most vehicles, the airbag light should come on for @6 seconds, and then go off if the system is working properly. If there is a fault or a problem in the system, the light will remain illuminated, or flash continuously. If the airbag light does not work properly, some vehicles have an audible tone that sounds indicating a problem with the airbag light system. When the light is on (or the tone is sounding), the airbag will NOT deploy, even in an accident. This website gives you the procedure for diagnosing and resetting airbag lights on the …scanlist.aspx page listed below.

The flashing light on your car is telling there is a problem. On some vehicles, the light is flashing a two digit code. Your vehicle will require a scan tool for the proper diagnosis (and not the one at Auto Zone—it needs to be airbag system specific, like a good body shop or the dealer). Here’s a site that will explain everything you need to know about airbag lights and resetting the system. Once you know the code, you can most likely repair it yourself. There are fairly easy procedures that most people are capable of repairing.
Airbagsolutions.com has the fault code charts to tell you what is wrong! Although it’s a pay site ($14.95/day), it’s a lot cheaper than going to the dealer.

Some vehicle manufacturers accommodate systems without a scanner (like Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infinity, Honda, Acura, Ford, Lincoln, Mazda & Mercury) . Most all other vehicles require a scan tool for the diagnosis. Here is a link to the list of vehicle and scanner requirements.
Check out these websites also for more info on airbag systems and the light.
Lastly, check your vehicle for recalls through this link.
