   Mercedes had the airbag before 1986. They introduced it in 1981 in the S-Class along with seat belt pretensioners. It just became standard in 1986.

   However, Mercedes-Benz was not the first company with an airbag. It was introduced in the mid 70’s on the larger GM vehicles. It was an expensive option, and is hard to find.
