How to fix Honda Civic SRS (Airbag) Light for code 9-3 Seatbelt Buckle Switch (very common)

Posted by admin

I made this video to explain how to fix the common issue of the SRS (airbag) light coming on in many 2001-2005 Honda Civic and possibly other Honda and Acura cars in and around those years.

Also, I have included a partial codes list for the SRS light in case you get a different code than the typical 9-3. If your code is not 9-3 then this will probably not fix your problem. These are codes that I found online, I do not have the service manual (or the pages referred to in the list).

1-1 Open in driver’s airbag inflator (see page 23-55)
1-2 Increased resistance in driver’s airbag inflator (see page 23-55)
1-3 Short to another wire or decreased resistance in driver’s airbag inflator (page 23-57)
1-4 Short to power in driver’s airbag inflator (see page 23-59)
1-5 Short to ground in driver’s airbag inflator (see page 23-61)
2-1 Open in front passenger’s airbag inflator (see page 23-63)
2-2 Increased resistance in front passenger’s airbag inflator (see page 23-63)
2-3 Short to another wire or decreased resistance in fr passenger’s airbag inflator (23-64)
2-4 Short to power in front passenger’s airbag inflator (see page 23-66)
2-5 Short to ground in front passenger’s airbag inflator (see page 23-67)
3-1 Open in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-69)
3-2 Increased resistance in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-69)
3-3 Short to another wire or decreased resistance in left side seat belt tensioner (23-71)
3-4 Short to power in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-73)
3-5 Short to ground in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-75)
4-1 Open in right side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-77)
4-2 Increased resistance in right side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-77)
4-3 Short to another wire or decreased resistance in left side seat belt tensioner (23-79)
4-4 Short to power in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-81)
4-5 Short to ground in left side seat belt tensioner (see page 23-83)

5-_ Internal failure of SRS unit (see page 23-85)
6-_ Internal failure of SRS unit (see page 23-85)
7-_ Internal failure of SRS unit (see page 23-85)
8-_ Internal failure of SRS unit (see page 23-85)

9-1
Internal failure of the SRS unit. If intermittent, could mean internal failure of the unit or a faulty indicator light circuit. Refer to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures (see page 23-38). Otherwise see page 23-85.

9-2
Internal failure of the SRS unit. If intermittent, could mean internal failure of the power supply (VB line). Refer to Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures (see page 23-38). Otherwise see page 23-85.

9-3 Faulty driver’s seat belt buckle switch

9-6 Faulty left front sensor (see page 23-88)
9-7 Faulty right front sensor (see page 23-91)
10-1 Seat belt tensioners (and airbag(s)) deployed (see page 23-85)

Occupancy Seat Fix fitted, BMW

Posted by admin

I’ve had a lot of questions from people about where to install the bypass i made in my other video(found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2UqGJ_LK3Y) so i’ve made this video to show you how i fitted it to an E46. Its pretty much the same for most other BMW’s and its very easy.

Simply tap the sensor you made, into the white and blue cables and tape them up. Don’t reconnect the old Blue and white wire plug as that will cause the airbag light to come back on again. tuck everything away nicely and if needed, use a couple of cable ties to make sure the wiring doesn’t get knocked by a rear seat passengers feet.
I had to use my INPA diagnostics machine to reset the airbag light as it was a permanent one. If your airbag light is an intermittent one then you will usually get away without needing to have the code cleared with diagnostics.

A little background on what this sensor is and what it does,
The occupancy sensor is a mat thats built into the seat and it tells the computer if there is a person sitting there. If there are no passengers and the car is crashed then it wont deploy the passenger airbags, only the driver ones.

This sensor is well known for going bad and this is why it triggers the airbag light. Unfortunately it costs upwards of 4-500 quid in parts and labour to have the seat mat replaced but with this mod, the bypassyou made (as per my previous video), or even bought of ebay etc will tell the computer that there is a passenger in the seat at all times and will always fire both passenger and driver airbags in the even of an accident instead of firing just the driver one.
Making up this bypass is very easy and can be done very cheaply too.

As always, I hope you find this useful and feel free to rate it, ask questions etc etc. 🙂

Install TYPE-R Seats – Airbag Fix & Reset

Posted by admin

This video will show you how to bypass the error on your instrument dials when you remove the standard, airbag equiped seats in your 7th generation civic or other era honda. The Type-R seats, or any others you want to install dont have airbags built in so installing them will throw an airbag warning light up on the dials.
Installing these resistors as shown will fool the ECU into believing the airbags are still there as the resistors return the same resistance to the ECU as the standard seats once did.
This mod will work on all civics from 2001 to 2005 and may work on some of those after this date. The included models are as follows, EM, ES, EP and EU Civics.
